home grooming tips

Every so often, we will provide tips and tricks here for you to practice grooming at home with your furry little friend.  Grooming does not end with us, it should be a daily routine to keep your pets happy and healthy.

brushing

Brushing your dog regularly can help keep them healthy and happy, and make them look good. Here are some tips for brushing your dog:

  • Brush in the direction of hair growth: Use firm strokes to remove dead hair.
  • Start at the bottom: Brush your dog from the skin out, starting at the bottom of their back legs and working your way up.
  • Use the right brush: Use a rubber-bristled brush for short, smooth, or wiry coats, or a rubber-bristled brush or wire slicker brush for long, silky, or curly coats. You can also use a shedding blade to reduce shedding and prevent mats.
  • Brush the inside, outside, and between the toes: Pay special attention to the back tendon, which can get knotted.
  • Don't use too much pressure: Brushing too often can harm your dog.

As a wise old groomer once said, "No brushy brushy, we shavey shavey."  It's good practice to keep your dog's coat maintained so we can have the best structure to groom them the way you would like.
